“Be Prepared and Plan for the Unexpected”

Presenter: Matthew Puvogel, Ready New York Outreach Coordinator

NYC Emergency Management

  1. NYC Emergency Management works with other city agencies such as the Department of Health.
  2. NYC Emergency Management provides outreach to people with developmental disabilities and seniors.
  3. Information is provided before and after an emergency such as during hurricane season.
  4. In case of an emergency, you should create an emergency support network by listing your support network contacts and out-of-state contact. Having two contacts is important. Long distance phone calls maybe easier to make.
  5. Develop a plan which includes important health and life-saving information

such as medications, doses, Health insurance plan, Doctor(s), and Pharmacy.

  1. Be prepared to make other transportation plans if your subway or bus is not running.
  2. For those with disabilities, creating communication cards can help. The card should describe your needs in short phrases.
  3. When it comes time to evacuate, know where you will meet family, and/or friends. Pick two places to meet. You should either meet near your home or farther away from your neighborhood.
  4. City shelters are open during evacuations. They have charging stations for wheelchairs or communication devices. Disability access and interpretation are available.
  5. If you have to leave, have prepared a Go Bag that will have supplies for 2 to 3 days. It should contain water, snacks, first aid kit, flashlight, whistle, toiletries, pen, paper, medications, music, headphones, extra batteries, radio, copies of ID’s, cash in small bills, extra cane if needed, supplies for pet, and depending on the weather, a blanket, hat or sunglasses. The Go Bag should be kept in an accessible location.
  6. In your home, you should assemble an Emergency Supply Kit that should have enough supplies for up to 3 days. It should contain 1 gallon of water per person per day, canned food, can opener, first aid kit, flashlight, batteries, portable chargers, dog food if necessary, and those with a developmental disability will have different supplies.
  7. You can sign up for Notify NYC to get emergency notifications via email, phone, text, and instant messenger.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 2082 Lexington Avenue, 4th Floor. The topic will be announced.
