  • The Metropolitan Parent Center is a Parent Training and Information Center that provides information, training and one-to-one support to families of children with the full range of disabilities ages 0-26. Parents will develop skills and knowledge that will help their children achieve academic and functional skills that lead to independent productive adult lives, to the maximum extent possible.

  • Family Support Case Management

This is a non-Medicaid case management services that provides coordination and linkage to services, assistance with SSI, Medicaid and other benefits referrals to camp, respite, reimbursement and other services, Medicaid waiver enrollment, educational advocacy and more. For residents of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens.

  • Family Reimbursement

Family Brooklyn and Bronx residents, must be OPWDD eligible, up to $500 reimbursement for respite, in-home respite, transportation, furniture, appliances and camp.

  • We Are Parents Too

Parenting skills for parents with developmental disabilities. Weekly classes on topics such as: family planning, nutrition, increasing advocacy skills and budgeting. Advocacy available for issues to ACS, child custody and foster care.

  • Pathway to Employment services/Caminos

Offers services to individuals interested in achieving employment. This service offers an individualized planning process that helps identify career or vocational direction. Individual must be enrolled in the Home and Community Based Waiver (HCBS).

Manhattan Family Support Conference Preparation

Housing Assistance Services

  1. The flyer for the conference was reviewed. The flyer should be finalized by the next meeting.
  2. The conference is taking place on 12/13/2016 from 10-2pm at the New York Academy of Medicine in the same room as previous years.
  3. There will be six workshops. Three workshops taking place in the morning and three workshops in the afternoon.
  4. There will be one workshop in Spanish.
  5. The doors will open at 9:30 for set up.
  6. Volunteers are wanted.
  7. With regards to the Manhattan Family Support Services Directory, an excel sheet will be emailed by Janice, make corrections, and return to her as soon as possible.
  8. Wendy discussed Housing Advocacy. There is a confusion that UCP is a broker, but they are there to guide people through the process to low-income housing and housing court.
  9. For low-income housing, the application has to be renewed every 2 years before called and put on a waiting list for NYCHA.
  10. The waiting list for NYCHA is currently 300,000.
  11. Senior housing is also available.
  12. NYCHA Section 8 has been closed since 2007.
  13. There are different types of Section 8 vouchers. HPD Section 8 is still open but you need a referral from HRA.
  14. Project based vouchers are assigned to particular apartments not families.
  15. For affordable housing, you can apply online or by mail through NYC Housing Connect.
  16. Individuals or households who meet the income and household size requirements listed may apply.
  17. The date of birth, social security number, and income are what is needed.
  18. 7% of the apartments are set aside for those with an impairment.
  19. Yesenia discussed ISS through OPWDD funding.
  20. ISS is a subsidy.
  21. An individual who can function independently can apply. We will do the application for those 18 and over.
  22. Services such as Community Habilitation and Respite are services that have to be applied for independently.
  23. Front Door is required.
  24. Surveys will be emailed regarding 3 topics you would like to discuss.

 

The next meeting will take place on October 11, 2016 at 80 Maiden Lane, 2nd Floor. There will be an ISS presentation.
