In Children's Committee Minutes, Minutes

Greetings:

The following is a brief overview of the last Manhattan Developmental Disabilities Council-Children’s Committee Meeting, held at AHRC’s Central Park Preschool/The Jewish Guild for the Blind Auditorium, January 28, 2011.

NOTE: Per the last MDDC-CC meeting, held October 27, 2010, Christina developed, revised with Committee member input, and sent out a Survey to one of AHRC’s Preschools as a pilot project, to secure information about desired services or discussion topics parents with special needs children felt was needed. Responses from this survey resulted in the Presentation that was given at this January 28th meeting.

1. The meeting was opened by Co-Chair Christina Muccioli .

2. There were over 40 attendees for this meeting, consisting mainly of parents of special needs children, and several service providers/representatives from Assistance Agencies

Current Business: Action Alert

Wini Schiff, IAC’s Associate Executive Director for Legislative Affairs spoke about the legislative process, the current state of financial support & funding for (parents) children with special needs, and explained how parents could become actively involved in lobbying for Special Needs – on their own and in concert with IAC’s Team. Attending parents were receptive and, in fact, these families agreed to give their names for further involvement in advocacy issues and in the Children’s Committee

Presentation: “Dealing with Your Child’s Challenging Behavior”

Louise Marchini, AHRC’s Assistant Director of Clinical Services QA, presented, “Dealing with Your Child’s Challenging Behavior”. This was a 90 minute Power Point Presentation that included an open Q&A forum. The Session was a “hands-on” approach and received very positive feedback from the audience. See Attachment for a copy of the Power Point. MDDC-CC Presentation 1-28-11
